The GOAT debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi could be over by the end of this season.
Robbie Savage reckons 20 Premier League goals from Cristiano Ronaldo this season will crown him as ‘the best player ever’.
The former Leicester City midfielder believes Lionel Messi’s low-key start to life at Paris Saint-Germain leaves him on the back foot in the GOAT battle, meaning Ronaldo can end football’s greatest debate once and for all.
The two legends both swapped clubs in the summer and have had different fortunes. While CR7 is banging the goals in for Manchester United, Messi hasn’t fared so well. The former Barcelona man has scored one goal in five games for PSG and has failed to find the back of the net in Ligue 1.
What did Savage say?
“I think this is the pivotal season where Ronaldo, for me, will be crowned the best player ever,” the Welshman told William Hill.
“Messi started PSG, you know, he’s had a couple of injuries and is not got off to the best start in terms of, you know, no goals in Ligue 1. I know he scored that wonderful goal in the Champions League against Man City but Ronaldo, what has he got? Five goals already for Manchester United, late winners.
“So I would say, because Ronaldo has done it in Spain, he started off in Portugal, come to the Premier League, Italy, and now doing it again at 36 in the Premier League.”
Savage added: “For me, you know, the French league, in strength and depth, isn’t the greatest, and this could be the season where it’s finally put to bed, the two greatest players ever, you know. I’ll add into that [Diego] Maradona and Pele, but Maradona was more of my era. “
“I would say the two greatest players ever if this season dictates, Ronaldo in the Premier League getting 20 goals, and Messi struggling in Ligue 1, I would say Ronaldo is the greatest ever.”
