After suffering one of the worst defeats of his career, Cristiano Ronaldo urged his teammates to get their act together for the sake of Manchester United fans.
Cristiano Ronaldo says Manchester United fans deserve ‘much better’ after the trouncing they suffered at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Liverpool made light work of United to snatch a 5-0 win at the Theatre of Dreams. All five of their goals came within the opening 50 minutes of the clash. Mohamed Salah led the way with a hat-trick, while Naby Keita and Diogo Jota scored the other two goals.
It was United’s biggest home defeat to Liverpool in 126 years, and the second time in Ronaldo’s career that he had lost a match by a 5-0 margin – the first one being against Barcelona in 2010.
“Sometimes the result is not the one we fight for. Sometimes the score is not the one we want. And this is on us, only on us, because there’s no one else to blame,” Ronaldo posted on Instagram.
“Our fans were, once again, amazing in their constant support. They deserve better than this, much better, and it’s up to us to deliver.
“The time is now!”
The 36-year-old, who had a goal ruled out for offside, returns to action next Saturday for a trip to Tottenham for another Premier League match.
United are currently down in seventh-place in the standings, three points outside the top-four and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.
