The Portuguese superstar decided against committing his future to a South American side.
Corinthians president Duilio Monteiro Alves has revealed the Brazilian club made an offer to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo became a free agent after leaving Manchester United in November. Following a month of speculation over CR7’s future, he finally announced his decision to join the Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
The blockbuster transfer made Ronaldo the highest-earning footballer in the world. The Portugal international will receive £250m to feature for Al Nassr until 2025.
Speaking after his unveiling, Ronaldo revealed he had chosen the Saudi Pro side despite receiving a number of other offers.
Monteiro Alves confirms Corinthians’ interest in signing CR7, revealing they offered him a £480,000-per-week contract.
“We made an offer to Cristiano Ronaldo. A salary equal to what he earned at United, two-year deal with the help of sponsors,” president Alves told BAND in Brazil.
“I know he also had proposals from Europe. But the proposal from Saudi Arabia was 20 times higher. I spoke six, seven times with Jorge Mendes and, in the end, we sent a proposal through another person.”
In addition to Corinthians, MLS side Sporting Kansas City were also in the race to sign Ronaldo. However, none of the interested sides was able to match Al Nassr’s astronomical offer.
