Ronaldo only needed to get on the pitch this evening against Young Boys in order to match Iker Casillas’ all-time Champions League record. Before today, the legendary Spanish goalie held the record of most caps in the continental tournament. Today, Ronaldo equaled this record and just needs one more game to break it. This is what Manchester United’s website published before the game: “Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will equal the record for the all-time highest number of appearances made in the Champions League, when he plays against Young Boys this evening.
“Having been named in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI for tonight’s game in Switzerland (17:45 BST), Ronaldo will play his 177th, and record-tying, game in European club football’s elite competition. The tally, that excludes our no.7’s four matches played in qualifying rounds, sees him go level with current record-holder and three-time tournament winner Iker Casillas. The former Real Madrid and Porto goalkeeper has retired since setting the bar at 177 during the Portuguese side’s 4-1 home defeat to Liverpool at the quarter-final stage of the 2018/19 competition, and there’s no doubt that Ronaldo will have one eye on surpassing his former team-mate’s historic achievement in our other group matches to come!”
