It is now only a matter of when before Ronaldo becomes the top-international scorer of all time in Portugal colors.
After firing blanks in the first two qualifiers this year, Ronaldo scored his 31st goal in World Cup qualifying in Portugal’s 3-1 victory at Luxembourg.
It is much relief for CR7 after he was wrongly denied a goal in his last outing against Serbia.
Another goal for Ronaldo means he has now scored for Portugal in every calendar year since his first international goal in 2004.
Also, he is now just six goals away from tying the all-time scoring record for a men’s national team. The record of 109 goals is held by former Iran striker Ali Daei, the only other male soccer player to surpass the 100-goal milestone.
Gerson Rodrigues gave Luxembourg a shock lead in the 30th minute but Diogo Jota equalized for Portugal in the second minute of stoppage. Ronaldo and Joao Palhinha added second-half goals to secure a comeback win for Fernando Santos and company.
Portugal were coming off a 2-2 draw against Serbia. Both teams are tied with seven points at the top after three matches.
At this rate, Ronaldo could make the international record his own at some point before the end of the year. possibly during the Euros later in June.
