Ahead of tonight’s match against Villarreal, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to break a new UEFA Champions League historic record.

Cristiano Ronaldo keeps making Champions League history without breaking a sweat and in great form. At the age of 36, the Portugal international has been named inside Manchester United’s starting eleven for tonight’s Champions League match against Villarreal. During the opening game against Young Boys, Ronaldo matched Iker Casillas’ 177 games played as the all-time leader on this list. Today he surpasses his former teammate and reaches 178 matches in his favorite competition: the UEFA Champions League.

Also, Cristiano is only 22 goals away from scoring 700 at a club level and only 11 goals away from 800 between club and country. His numbers just keep piling up and this season might be the one where he breaks all the records. Today, he faces Villarreal in a star-studded starting lineup that seeks to erase the last game’s unexpected defeat. Will the Red Devils win tonight with Cristiano Ronaldo as their top player against the ‘Yellow Submarine’?

Manchester United announced Ronaldo’s record.

This is what the Red Devils published on their website: “Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will become the outright record holder for the most appearances by a player in the UEFA Champions League, during the Reds’ clash with Villarreal. Having been named in the starting XI to face the Yellow Submarine in our group stage clash at Old Trafford, our No.7 will move on to 178 appearances in the competition.

“It means he now moves one clear of Iker Casillas, who was the previous all-time record holder, having drawn level with the Spaniard after playing against BSC Young Boys earlier in the competition. The Portuguese was already the record holder for having appeared in the most finals, with six across his time at both the Reds and Real Madrid, but is also now equal with Casillas’ record number of group stage appearances with 95. In addition, Cristiano will also be making his 900th appearance in club football against tonight’s Spanish opposition, having scored 678 goals during that time.”
