The two legendary footballers paid tribute to each other after CR7 won a special FIFA award.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Pele exchanged heartwarming messages on social media, showing the clear amount of respect that lies between them.
Pele was first to send a video message, as he congratulated Ronaldo for winning a FIFA Special Award on Monday’s The Best FIFA Awards ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland.
Taking to Instagram, the Brazilian icon posted in the caption: “Cristiano, congratulations on the special tribute from FIFA. I’m looking forward to meeting you in person to give you my hug. I recorded this message with great care. See you soon! #TheBest.”
What did Pele say in his video message?
In the video that accompanied Pele’s post, the 81-year-old said: “Cristiano Ronaldo, it is a great satisfaction to be here, in Brazil, to congratulate you for everything you have done in sport and especially for everything you have done in football.
“We are on the same team, of course: football. All these years that we’ve been crossing the world, I haven’t had the opportunity to hug you in person, because we never stop. But here goes, with all my heart, my congratulations to you and I hope that one of these days we can see each other and I can give you a hug in person.
“Cristiano Ronaldo, good luck and see you next time.”
Ronaldo posts a brilliant reply
Upon seeing the tribute from someone he has long admired and looked up to, Ronaldo was clearly touched. He actually shared Pele’s video on Instagram Stories (see below) and responded to it in kind.
Ronaldo replied: “When Pelé talks, the world listens. It’s impossible not to get emotional when such an amazing person shows all his respect and admiration towards me. An eternal hero, a myth for all generations and a true legend of sports.
“As he wisely said, we are all in the same team: the team of football!
“Thank you, Pelé! I hope I get to see you very soon, so that we can smile together and talk about this game that we love.”
