The Dutch forward is yet to live up to expectations after his winter move to Anfield.

Eredivisie’s inferior quality compared to the Premier League has contributed to Cody Gakpo’s “difficult” start at Liverpool, suggests Ronald Koeman.

Gakpo scored three goals during his impressive World Cup campaign with Netherlands. His performances attracted interest from a number of elite sides, but Liverpool moved fast to secure his services.

Since the January transfer, however, Gakpo has failed to make an impact at Anfield. The former PSV star is yet to score his maiden goal for the Reds as Jurgen Klopp’s side continue their tough start to 2023.

Speaking about Gakpo’s start at Liverpool, Koeman told Andy van der Meyde’s YouTube show: “If you don’t score or you’re not important and you don’t win any matches, it’s very difficult, especially for a young player.

“If that was someone aged 28, with experience, it would be different.”

The Netherlands manager added: “The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands.

“But they are also young boys, aren’t they? Like Gravenberch going to Bayern and not playing. Then that is difficult.”

Having registered three defeats and a draw in their last four matches, Liverpool have slipped to the tenth spot on the Premier League table.

Gakpo and co hope to return to winning ways by beating Everton in the Merseyside derby next Monday.
