The Saints midfielder has emerged as a top target for Liverpool.

Southampton will reportedly reject Liverpool’s £42m offer for Romeo Lavia.

The Reds have continued their search for a new midfielder in recent weeks. Lavia has stayed as the Reds’ priority target despite interest from Chelsea.

The Belgian star is reportedly keen to join Liverpool, but the club are yet to reach an agreement with Southampton.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton are demanding £50m for Lavia. The price tag is £8m more than Liverpool’s latest offer, but the two clubs have reportedly decided to continue negotiations.

Liverpool want to avoid a bidding war with Chelsea, who are struggling to complete a move for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. In case the Ecuador international’s move falls through, the Blues might intensify their efforts to sign Lavia.

Last season, Lavia made 34 appearances for Southampton across all competitions. The 19-year-old’s brilliant displays, however, weren’t enough to keep the Saints in the Premier League.

Liverpool are keen to make Lavia their third summer signing after adding Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mc Allister to their ranks. Following the departures of Fabinho, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Naby Keita, the Reds are keen to improve their squad depth in midfield.

In addition to Lavia, Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka has been linked with a move to Anfield ahead of the next season.
