The owner has come under the spotlight since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this week.

Several members of the British parliament have called for sanctions against Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in recent days. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian oligarch has come under fierce pressure to hand out his ownership of the English club.

In a surprising statement on Saturday, the 55-year-old announced he will hand over the club’s ‘stewardship and care’ to their charitable foundation.

He wrote on the club’s website“During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

“I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.

“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

Abramovich is under pressure for his alleged ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Labour MP Chris Bryant requested the football officials to ban the Russian businessman from owning Chelsea.

The recent developments come a day before Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. While Abramovich’s resign will not have an immediate effect on the team, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admitted earlier today that it might distract his players ahead of the Wembley final.

The bookmakers are on the same page with the German manager, favouring Liverpool to clinch their first Carabao Cup title since 2012.
