Roma won their first-ever European trophy under Jose Mourinho.
Roma defeated Feyenoord 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final on Thursday. A historic victory for Giallorossi made them the first winners of the newly-introduced competition.
Roma win ‘their Champions League’! 🏆
The game started with both sides trying to establish their dominance over the possession. Surprisingly, it was Roma who showed more interest in controlling the midfield.
Their efforts paid off when an incredible assist from Gianluca Mancini found Nicolo Zaniolo inside Feyenoord’s box. The Italian star controlled the ball before chipping it past Justin Biijlow to make it 1-0 for the Italian giants.
Feyenoord were not able to find their feet in the game before the half-time whistle. But, they looked much improved in the second period.
The Eredivisie heavyweights made several goalscoring chances, with Gernot Trauner and Cyriel Dessers coming the closest. However, Roma managed to hold on to their defensive integrity and win the game.
The Gialorossi even had a chance to increase their lead at the dying stages of the second half. But, Biijlow’s great save prevented Lorenzo Pellegrini from scoring Roma’s second goal.
Mourinho, who had said the Conference League is ‘Roma’s Champions League’, lifts his fifth major European trophy while the Giallorossi celebrate their first-ever title in Europe.
