Deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, the defender has now joined forces with the reigning Argentinian champions.

Marcos Rojo has completed his transfer from Manchester United to Boca Juniors, both clubs confirmed on Tuesday.

Rojo joined Man United from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014  for a fee in the region of €20 million. He made 122 appearances in his seven years at the club, scoring two goals and winning the FA Cup, Football League Cup, Community Shield, and Europa League.

The defender’s time at Old Trafford was largely overshadowed by fitness and consistency issues. He featured just a combined 30 times in the last three seasons and was limited to just 45 minutes of action – that too with United’s U-23 team – in 2020-21.

The 30-year-old center-back is understood to have joined Boca Juniors on a free transfer after the termination of his latest Man United contract – the one he signed in March 2018.

Reliable sources suggest he has signed a two-year deal with the reigning Argentinian champions with the option to extend for a further year.

Rojo becomes the fourth player to part ways with Manchester United in the January transfer window. Jesse Lingard joined West Ham on loan, Facundo Pellistri made a temporary switch to Alaves, and Odion Ighalo left the club after the expiration of his loan deal.
