The Real Madrid and Brazil attacker has revealed the abuse he has received since the World Cup qualifier against Argentina.
Rodrygo faced racist abuse on social media after Brazil’s 1-0 loss to Argentina in the World Cup qualifying match in Rio de Janeiro.
The match on Tuesday was a tense and controversial affair. Before kick-off, Rodrygo was seen in a heated discussion with Argentina duo Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. The game itself had a 30-minute delay because of clashes between Brazilian police and Argentine fans.
Now, Rodrygo has hit back at the insults and offensive comments on his social media accounts.
“Racists are always on duty,” the 22-year-old posted on X. “My social networks were invaded with insults and all kinds of nonsense. It’s there for everyone to see!
“If we don’t do what they want, if we don’t behave as they think we should, if we wear something that bothers them, if we don’t lower our heads when we are attacked, if we occupy spaces that they think are theirs alone, racists take action with his criminal behavior. Their bad luck. We will not stop!”
Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo’s teammate at both Brazil and Real Madrid, showed his support by tweeting, “We won’t stop!”
In the game on Tuesday, Nicolas Otamendi scored the only goal in the 63rd minute to secure Argentina a 1-0 win. The result marked Brazil’s first home loss in World Cup qualifying. The Selecao rank in sixth place in the CONMEBOL standings, with only seven points from six games.
