The Brazil international has developed into one of the most promising young forwards in Europe at Real Madrid.

Rodrygo has revealed he came close to joining Barcelona before choosing Real Madrid as his first European club.

Before moving to Santiago Bernabeu in 2019, Rodrygo had already established a fine reputation at Santos. His performances for the Brazilian side attracted interest from a number of elite clubs, including Barcelona.

Speaking to Goal, the 22-year-old said: “When my father told me the news…I always tell this story. I had two shirts: one for Barça and one for Real Madrid and I had to choose. It was very easy for me to choose.

“But it was all agreed with Barcelona, it was a surprise for me, I didn’t expect Real Madrid to come. It was a scare but then it was one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Rodrygo was Carlo Ancelotti’s secret weapon during last season’s Champions League campaign. The Brazil youngster changed the course of several games through his performances as a substitute.

This season, however, has seen Rodrygo secure a regular spot in Ancelotti’s starting lineup. The former Santos star, who also played for Brazil during the World Cup, insists he’s not afraid to take responsibility.

“Yes, I’m always there to take responsibility. Like in the World Cup,” he added. “When they asked who wanted to take the kick I was there and I will always be there. I’m never going to shirk my responsibilities.”
