The Italian boss says it’s time for the Azzurri to ‘reflect’ on their recent performances and work toward the future.

A shocking 1-0 defeat against North Macedonia saw Italy crash out of Europe’s World Cup-qualifying playoffs for the second time in a row.

Roberto Mancini’s side were nowhere near the side that won the Euro 2022 last summer. They lacked enough edge to score against their motivated opponents, missing out on a chance to feature in the summer tournament.

On Saturday, Mancini published a message on Instagram, urging his side to focus on bouncing back from the defeat.

“Sometimes football can be a ruthless metaphor for life,” he wrote.

“Last summer we were on the top of Europe after having completed one of the most beautiful feats in the history of the national team. A few hours ago we woke up in one of the most dramatic points.

“We have gone from total joy to frustrating disappointment.

“It is really hard to accept, but also accepting the defeats in life is part of a healthy path of human and sporting growth.

“Let’s take some time to reflect and understand clearly. The only right move now is to raise your head and work towards the future.”

Italy will meet Turkey in a friendly game on Tuesday. The Crescent-Stars also failed to secure a World Cup qualification after suffering a 3-1 defeat against Portugal.
