As Lewandowski lies on the brink of an incredible record, Rummenigge has proclaimed the Bayern Munich star as the world’s best player.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is adamant Robert Lewandowski is better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Pole has had another incredible campaign for Bayern Munich, scoring 40 goals in only 28 Bundesliga games. He could break Gerd Muller’s record for most goals in a single league season by scoring against Augsburg on Saturday.

Lewandowski also comfortably leads the European Golden Shoe standings by a 20-point margin from Messi.

“He got the FIFA award for the best player in the world, so for me the case is clear,” Bayern chairman Rummenigge told Wirtualna Polska.

“OK, great talents have emerged in world football, such as Kylian Mbappe. Nevertheless, Robert Lewandowski is currently the best footballer in the world.

“In my opinion, he is currently better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.”

Bold words indeed from Rummenigge.

But the two-time Ballon d’Or winner wasn’t done as he reflected on Lewandowski’s progress since turning down the likes of Real Madrid to join Bayern in 2014.

“I remember seven years ago, we fought for him,” Rummenigge said on signing Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

“Yes, it was a fight, a tough fight, because there were many strong competitors, such as Real Madrid.

“Perhaps some, even Robert included, were not convinced that Bayern would win the Champions League, [and help him] be the world’s best scorer.

“But I perfectly remember the scene after our last triumph in Lisbon. Robert was sitting on the pitch next to me.

“He even cried a little with emotion. And it was obvious, he told me how happy he was that he had made his big football dream come true with Bayern.”
