Ahead of Liverpool’s match against Ajax, Manchester United’s legendary defender Rio Ferdinand admitted to having a soft spot for one of Liverpool’s midfielders.

It is unusual to hear a Manchester United hero give any praise to one of their rival’s players. After becoming the topic of discussion on BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand couldn’t help but reveal his love for Liverpool’s underrated Dutch star.

Having won both Premier League and Champions League, Gini Wijnaldum has played a key part in Liverpool’s recent success. However, Ferdinand believes the Dutchman hasn’t received the praise he deserves.

“I got to be honest: I love this player,” said Ferdinand on BT Sport.

“He’s very selfless, his intelligence, he’s underrated completely because he can play every single midfield position in that central area.”

Ferdinand also explained the differences between the roles Wijnaldum exerts for Liverpool and the Netherlands. The Red Devils’ idol praised the 30-year-old’s versatility on the field, as well as his overall effort.

“He plays a No.10 role for Holland, the way he defends here [for Liverpool],” he added.

“On the pitch you know how much work they’re getting through, how valuable they are.”

Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning that he is free to receive offers from other clubs at the beginning of 2021. This opportunity hasn’t gone unnoticed by Ronald Koeman, who has hinted his interest in his fellow countryman.
