The USMNT star is among the hottest prospects in the BVB squad that is filled with some of the most highly-rated talents in all of Europe.
Giovanni Reyna has “star potential” and could end up at “one of the best five teams in the world”, says the player’s former coach Raphael Wicky.
At just 18 years of age, Reyna is already an established performer for Borussia Dortmund, having started in each of their five games in 2021-22.
He has made 69 senior appearances in total for the Bundesliga outfit ever since making the move from the New York City FC academy in the summer of 2019, contributing 10 goals and 11 assists.
The attacking midfielder is also fast becoming a key figure in the United States national team, having earned nine caps so far.
“Gio Reyna has star potential,” Wicky, under whom Reyna worked in the United States U17s ranks, told Sport Bild.
“Even as his coach with the U17s, I was blown away by his unbelievable game intelligence and technical abilities, combined with his superb physical conditioning.
“He struck gold with his transfer to Germany. Training at BVB, he’s improved his game against the ball and defensive game. He fights for the good of the team and has internalized a winning mentality.
“If Gio continues to develop like this, he can go up another level and play for one of the best five teams in the world, including Bayern Munich.”
