Fluctuation in form saw BVB narrowly missed out on a second-place finish in the league last season.

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has called on his side to show more consistency in the coming season.

Borussia Dortmund dropped points on 14 occasions in the Bundesliga in 2020-21, losing 10 of their games while drawing four.

Some of the points were dropped in a highly unexpected fashion, with BVB suffering slip-ups against relegation-threatened sides FC Koln and Mainz.

In the final league standings, they sat at third, one point second-placed behind RB Leipzig and a whopping 14 behind champions Bayern Munich.

Quizzed on what changes he wants to see from his team compared to last season, Reus told a press conference: “Consistency. That has always been a key word for us in recent years.

“There were spells when we were very good, then we had spells when we weren’t stable.

“That’s what we need to do better this season and pick up points even if we play poorly. That’s what characterises the teams that end up winning titles and are one step further ahead in the way they go about a game.”

In spite of all their shortcomings, Dortmund were able to get their hands on silverware last season as they picked up the DFB-Pokal trophy by smashing Leipzig 4-1 in the final.

Reus added: “We need to be more consistent and at a level like we saw at the end of last season.

“That’s a reference point; we dominated opponents, stayed patient and scored our goals.”
