Things started pretty well for the Premier League side as youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi netted the opener in the 22nd minute. Again, the brilliance of Mason Mount in the center of the field aided the England international to put the ball past Alfred Gomis. A mesmerizing 50-yard cross from Mount was neatly finished by the rising star for Chelsea. Both the teams went into the tunnels with plenty to work on in the second half.

Rennes provided a tough fight in the last 45 minutes of the game. We saw constant threats from Julien Stephan’s side as they began to gain momentum in the match. Their efforts finally paid off as Sehrou Guirassy headed a bullet past Edouard Mendy in Chelsea’s goal. And with this late equalizer, it was certain that the game would end with both the sides locking heads.
However, substitute Olivier Giroud marked his presence with a last-minute header to rescue the Londoners. Hakim Ziyech yet again proved to be a crucial part of Chelsea’s beautiful counter-move. The Moroccan slipped the ball to teammate Timo Werner, who had been struggling to find the net for the entire game. The German subsequently made an attempt which was blocked by Gomis. Although, Giroud came out of nowhere to blast a towering header in the Rennes goalpost. This close win now secures Chelsea’s spot in the Round of 16 in the European tournament.
