The English right-back has become a cornerstone of Chelsea’s backline in recent seasons.

Reece James has opened up on his tough development process at Chelsea’s academy.

The England international made his senior debut under Frank Lampard in October 2019. Since then, he has developed into a crucial player for the Blues while securing a place in England’s lineup.

However, James reveals he used to play as a striker for Chelsea’s academy ranks.

“When I was growing up, I was a striker and I idolised Didier Drogba. He played in my team, he played in my position and I always looked up to him,” James said.

He added: “I stopped playing striker around the age of 11 or 12 and moved my way back into midfield.

I had three or four years there and then found myself at right back around the age of 15. I hated it for two or three years.”

James reveals the club were on the verge of releasing him when he started playing as a right back.

“There was probably a stage where I was close to getting released (by Chelsea) around the age of 15 or 16,” James added.

“I was probably one of the worst in the group and they were unsure of how I was going to develop.”

James has reclaimed his place in Chelsea’s lineup since returning from an injury that kept him out of the World Cup.

Following a crucial Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea will face Leicester City in the Premier League this weekend.
