FC Barcelona had the unique chance to reach the Spanish Supercup next Sunday if they defeated Real Sociedad at La Romareda. They had an especially difficult task after the news of Lionel Messi’s absence broke earlier today. Initially, there were images of the Argentine entering the stadium wearing his playing kit but he didn’t even make it to the bench.
In front of the Blaugranas was a Real Sociedad squad that is one of the most competitive sides in Spain. Barça struggled to find the back of the net but they struggled even more to find fluidity in their game during the first half. The opening goal finally came after a combination between Griezmann and De Jong. With the Dutch midfielder scoring a beautiful header that gave Barcelona the lead.
Ter Stegen steals the night from Oyarzabal
In the confrontation of the evening, we have Marc-Andre ter Stegen against Mikel Oyarzabal. During the second half, Real Sociedad was awarded a penalty that the striker scored against the German goalie. That was round one of their confrontations this evening, only Mikel didn’t imagine it yet. As time progressed, it was evident we were going all the way to extra time.
Eventually we went to penalties, especially knowing that Messi was in the stands. For the shootout, Ter Stegen was the hero of the evening after saving two penalties from Real Sociedad. He got sweet revenge against Oyarzabal. The Barcelona player who scored the winner was Riqui Puig but Ter Stegen was the hero. We’ll see who they get as a rival for next Sunday, Real Madrid or Athletic Club.
