Liverpool legend John Barnes believes the Reds should go all out for Real Madrid star Raphael Varane this summer.
Liverpool signing Raphael Varane this summer would come as a ‘smart’ piece of business, says John Barnes.
The Frenchman is approaching the final year of his Real Madrid contract and his future at the club remains uncertain.
In a bid to raise funds for summer signings, Los Blancos might be open to letting Varane leave this summer.
Manchester United are the current favorites to sign the 27-year-old, but Barnes has urged Liverpool to hijack a move from their rivals.
“Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,” Barnes told BonusCodeBets.
“He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play and for Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business.”
“He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.”
A big part of Liverpool’s struggles this season has hinged on their faltering backline. A long-term injury to Van Dijk and Joe Gomez has seen Jordan Henderson and Fabinho feature in defense for a good spell.
Ozan Kabak came in from Schalke in January but has failed to catch the eye so far.
Signing a player of Varane’s quality might indeed prove to be a ‘smart’ business, given that the Frenchman won’t cost too much in the current market.
