Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez amid their plans for defensive reinforcement.

Last season, the long-term injuries of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip caused an injury crisis in the Liverpool backline. It seemed like the perfect time for Joe Gomez to find his place in Jurgen Klopp’s lineup.

However, the young defender also suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out of action for months. This season, several groin and calf problems have prevented Gomez from starting a single league game for Liverpool.

The arrival of Ibrahima Konate has also made it harder for the English defender to get enough game time. In his appearances for Liverpool, Konate has quickly established himself as a reliable backup for the team’s centre-backs.

According to BBC, Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Gomez. The report claims Liverpool have no intention of selling the defender this winter. However, the Spanish giants might have a chance to sign Gomez in the summer.

Gomez’s contract at Anfield runs until 2024, with Liverpool being under no pressure to sell the defender. Having offloaded Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos last summer, Real Madrid might consider Gomez as a long-term replacement.

Several reports linked Gomez with a January loan as he continues to struggle for game time. However, Klopp dismissed the rumours earlier this month.

“It was obviously not the best year for him, but that’s how it goes,” the Liverpool gaffer said.

“We are patient, and Joe is patient.

“I have no plans to give anybody on loan in the winter.”
