The Bundesliga heavyweights have tied down the German talent to a new contract.

Florian Wirtz has signed a new five-year contract at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 19-year-old has established a reputation as one of the most promising midfielders in European football in recent seasons. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have been among his suitors but he has now extended his stay at Leverkusen.

“The connection between Bayer Leverkusen and Florian is already an extraordinary success story,” Sporting director Simon Rolfes told Leverkusen’s official website.

“Flo is a special player and has great significance for our club. In the same way, we offer him the best opportunities for a fantastic career.”

Wirtz added: “The boys here are an important reason why I feel at home here and why everything’s gone so well overall.”

“There’s a lot more to come from us and this club. That’s what we want to show all Bayer fans – and also those that aren’t!

“The development over the last couple of years has been breathtaking for me, and certainly not something I could have anticipated. I’m well aware that the team has played its role in that.”

Wirtz played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s midfield last season, registering ten assists in his 24 Bundesliga appearances. He is currently out of action with a cruciate ligament injury but will most likely recover once the new German top-flight campaign starts on August 5.
