The 23-year-old infuriated Real Madrid fans by deciding to extend his PSG contract ahead of the next season.

Luka Modric has reacted to Real Madrid’s failed attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain.

Following months of speculation, the French striker decided to extend his PSG contract until 2025 on May 21. The move frustrated Real Madrid, who had been pursuing the World Cup winner’s signature for over a year.

Modric insists the club is ‘above every player’ but believes everyone should respect Mbappe’s decision.

“Mbappe decided as he decided, that is his right and now he lives with that decision. It goes on,” he told Sportske

“We all thought he would come to us, it didn’t happen and – now what? Well, we’re not going to crucify the man.

“Mbappe is a great player, but as I always repeat, in any context, no player is more important than the club. Real is the greatest, above every player and it will always be like that.

“Who knows what can happen tomorrow, let alone in three or four years in football? Only time will tell.”

Mbappe himself left the door open for a possible move to Real Madrid in the future. Speaking to BBC back in May, the PSG star said: “It’s never over, never over.

“The only thing is that now I have signed a contract for three years more.

“You never know what can happen in the future.

“I give up to think about the future, I only think about the present and the present is I signed a new contract for three years more at Paris Saint-Germain.”
