The Dominican star will leave Santiago Bernabeu after five years.

Mariano Diaz will leave Real Madrid as a free agent this summer.

The striker left Real Madrid’s academy to join Lyon in 2017, only to be signed back by the club for €21m the next year. Diaz arrived at Real Madrid as one of the most promising forwards in European football but never managed to live up to expectations at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish giants have decided against extending Diaz’s deal, releasing him as a free agent this summer.

“Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and affection to Mariano, a player who has belonged to our youth academy from 2011 to 2016 and to the first team for six seasons, in which he has won 13 titles: 2 European Cups, 3 Club World Cups, 2 European Super Cups, 3 Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 2 Spanish Super Cups,” Real Madrid’s official statement reads.

“Real Madrid wishes him and his whole family the best of luck in this new stage.”

Spanyol striker Joselu is Real Madrid’s number one target to replace Diaz. However, the club will most likely sign another striker if Karim Benzema leaves for Al-Ittihad this summer.

Leeds United are reportedly keen to sign Diaz as a free agent, while the likes of Sevilla, Valencia, and Getafe have shown interest in signing him in the past.
