Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium was the place where Real Madrid got a visit from Atalanta in the Champions League. We got player ratings.

Even though they started the season with some major doubts, Real Madrid had a chance to get to the Champions League quarterfinals if they defeated Atalanta. Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad has remained consistent for the better part of the last couple of seasons. They tend to end in the Serie A Top Four and are generally a problem against Europe’s elite.

But recent months have proved that these types of squads can also falter. Real Madrid was there to pick up the slack and a ticket to the Champions League quarter-finals. Karim Benzema opened the score after an assist from Luka Modric right before the break. Both sides went to the dressing rooms with this aggregate result. But more was still to come in the second half.

Vinicius becomes an unlikely MVP.

After the break, Vinicius Junior became the most important player on the pitch with two specific moments. First, he created an incredible solo play that was nearly a goal but his lack of aim was too evident. Minutes after that, he got taken down inside the box and gave Sergio Ramos his chance to score from the spot. Near the end of the 90 minutes, Luis Muriel scored a beautiful free-kick that gave Atalanta a glimmer of hope.

But Marco Asensio scored the third goal for Real Madrid after an assist from Lucas Vazquez. On the aggregate, Los Blancos finished with a convincing 4-1 victory and could become the only La Liga squad in the quarterfinals. We’ll see how Atletico Madrid does against Chelsea tomorrow.
