Real Madrid dropped points in La Liga for the first time since October 2.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 against Girona in their La Liga game on Sunday. The Blancos had to settle for a home stalemate as their lead over Barcelona at the top of the table shrunk to one point.

Late surprise for Real Madrid!

Real Madrid dominated the game throughout the first half but met stiff resistance from Girona’s backline.

The pace of the game increased dramatically after half-time, with the hosts pushing for a breakthrough.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had to wait for 70 minutes to finally break the deadlock through Vinicius Junior.

A brilliant piece of build-up play saw Federico Valverde provide a precise chance for the Brazilian at the back post. Vinicius then made it 1-0 by nodding the ball home from close range.

Real Madrid’s lead, however, lasted only ten minutes as Girona shocked their opponents with a late penalty.

The Blancos went all-in with their attacks in the final ten minutes, going as far as to score through Rodrygo’s 90th-minute shot. However, the referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the build-up play.

Girona attempted to finish off the job with a quick counter-attack later on, forcing Toni Kroos to pick up his second yellow card in the 91st minute.

The draw decreases Real Madrid’s lead at the top of the table to one point. Carlo Ancelotti’s side will return to Champions League to host Celtic on Wednesday.
