Alvaro registered his maiden Real Madrid goal to prevent Atletico from winning the derby.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in their La Liga clash on Saturday. The Blancos dropped points again, allowing Barca to extend their lead in the title race.

A late equaliser!

Real Madrid started the game by taking over the possession but remained reluctant to push for the opener.

Atletico, on the other hand, spent most of the first period in their own half. Diego Simeone’s side made a few counter-attacking attempts but didn’t have enough bodies forward to beat their opponents’ backline.

After the break, Real Madrid increased the pressure to open the scoring. However, Atletico maintained their defensive integrity, keeping the likes of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior under control.

Atletico were trying to take control of the game when Angel Correa received a straight red card in the 64th minute. The Argentine international elbowed Antonio Rudiger, forcing Atletico to play the final half-hour being a man down.

Real Madrid, however, weren’t able to change the course of the game in their favour after the red card. Instead, Atletico managed to get ahead through Jose Gimenez in the 78th minute.

Following a free kick from Griezmann, the Uruguayan star smashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

However, Atletico couldn’t withstand their opponents’ pressure after the goal. Only six minutes later, Luka Modric’s corner found Alvaro inside the box. The 18-year-old flew above the Atletico defenders before heading the ball into the far corner of the net.

The Blancos made a few more attempts to complete their comeback but had to settle for the draw. The result allows Barca to go ten points clear at the top of the La Liga table by beating Almeria on Sunday.
