Atletico Madrid escaped defeat at Santiago Bernabeu with a last-minute strike from Marco Llorente.
Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in their La Liga game on Sunday. The Blancos were punished for being wasteful against their city rivals.
What happened?
Real Madrid established control over the possession early on as Atletico struggled to find their feet in the game. Following a few missed chances, the Blancos’ efforts paid off when Brahim Diaz put them ahead in the 20th minute.
Diaz, who replaced Vinicius Junior in Real Madrid’s lineup just before the kick-off, converted a deflected short pass inside Atletico’s six-yard box to make it 1-0 for Real Madrid.
After the break, Atletico increased the pressure on Real Madrid’s backline to snatch an early equalizer. But the hosts almost ran away with the victory, as it took almost the entire second half for Atletico to find the back of the net.
Marcos Llorente flew above three Real Madrid defenders to head home a fantastic assist from Memphis Depay. The game’s last touch secured a point for Atletico as Real Madrid’s gap to Girona at the top of the table shrunk to two points.
