A narrow victory in their most recent fixture saw England cement their place at the summit of their group in the Nations League.

It would be unfair to say that Belgium deserved to lose as they were the dominant side, at least statistically, in the match.

However, it would also be unfair to say that England did not deserve to win. After all, Gareth Southgate’s proved their worth in a tough test of fighting spirit as they came from behind to beat the number one ranked nation.

Belgium were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Romelu Lukaku, as he tried to rush further into the opposition box, was brought down by Eric Dier. Lukaku made no mistake in converting the resultant spot-kick as he sent the ball left-footed into the corner of the net to put his side on the front foot.

It could’ve been much worse for England as the high-pressing by the opponents left their three-man defense quite vulnerable. They could’ve been two-goal down in the first half but a goal against them was ruled out for offside.

At the 39-minute mark, Marcus Rashford breathed life back into the game for the Three Lions. The referee pointed to the spot when Jordan Henderson went down in the box after Thomas Meunier reached out to put a hand on his shoulder while marking the Englishman. Rashford, cool as ice, sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way as he netted the equalizer.

A stroke of fortune in the second half then prompted the scales to tip in the other direction. Mason Mount’s shot took a huge deflection and looped over Mignolet before dipping into the net.

Both the teams had a few good chances but they could not make it count as the 2-1 scoreline favored England after the final whistle.
