The Black Stars began their latest challenge for the continental crown with a defeat in their first match.

Ghana manager Milovan Rajevac has suggested his side’s inability to finish their chances off cost them against Morocco.

The West Africans fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Atlas Lions on Monday for their opening game in Group C, leaving them last in the group table and three points outside a knockout spot.

Ghana only had five shots in the match, with two of them on target. Captain Andre Ayew came close to scoring with a looping volley, but otherwise they were left frustrated in an uneventful affair.

Sofiane Boufal’s goal seven minutes from time sealed the win for Morocco in Yaounde.

‘We hope to score goals and win the next two games’

Speaking after the final whistle, Rajevac gave his views on the team’s performance and future targets.

“It was a difficult game for us, on the pitch were two great teams of African football. Morocco scored on the first opportunity it had,” said the Serbian.

“I take this opportunity to congratulate Morocco and my players on the commitment shown on the pitch. We still have two games to go and we will stay focused on them.

“It is true that we have created more scoring opportunities, but we have not been able to materialize that opportunity. We are unhappy in that respect.

“We hope to score goals and win the next two games. I will calmly analyze the goal shot conceded and see where the team lost control of the game. Right now, we will keep our focus on the match.”

Ghana return to action on Friday away to Group C leaders Gabon in Yaounde, Cameroon.
