Paris Saint-Germain defender Lucas Hernández is set to undergo surgery after rupturing his left knee ACL, a devastating blow that is likely to sideline him from representing France at the European Championship.
Hernandez sustained the injury during PSG’s Champions League semifinal first leg against Borussia Dortmund, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Parisian club in Germany. PSG confirmed that the 28-year-old underwent a scan, with surgery scheduled in the coming days.
The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse for Hernández, with Euro 2024 set to take place in Germany starting from June 14. France coach Didier Deschamps is expected to announce his squad on May 16, and Hernández’s absence would be a significant setback for the defending champions.
This setback adds to Hernández’s woes, as he only managed to play eight minutes at the 2022 World Cup after suffering a similar ACL injury in his right knee during France’s opening game against Australia.
Hernández, who joined PSG from Bayern Munich in the offseason, recently celebrated winning the league title with his new club.
The defender, capped 37 times by France since his debut in 2018, expressed his determination to bounce back stronger in an Instagram post, pledging to give his all for PSG upon signing with the club.
France will commence their Euro campaign against Austria in Duesseldorf on June 17, with Poland and the Netherlands also in their Group D.
The French national team sent their wishes for Hernández’s recovery on social media, acknowledging his absence from the squad for the foreseeable future.
Hernández’s injury is a significant loss for both PSG and France, with his absence depriving both teams of his defensive prowess and experience. As he embarks on the road to recovery, Hernández will be hoping to return to action stronger than ever before.
