The former Liverpool star failed to impress in his first season at Parc des Princes.
Roma are reportedly close to signing Georginio Wijnaldum from Paris Saint-Germain on a loan deal.
Following his free move away from Liverpool, Wijnaldum struggled to live up to expectations at PSG. He hopes to rediscover his spark at Roma, where he would play alongside Paulo Dybala in Giallorossi’s midfield line.
According to Goal, Roma hope they can complete Wijnaldum’s move before the end of this week. The Italian giants are reportedly working on a one-year loan deal.
The contract will most likely include an obligation-to-buy clause, which would see the Dutchman join Roma on a permanent deal next summer. The required fee for such a transfer would be €10-15m.
PSG have also agreed to pay half of Wijnaldum’s wages for the next season. The former Liverpool star earns around €9m, which is unaffordable for Roma.
Wijnaldum started 18 Ligue 1 games for PSG last season, helping them win the domestic title. However, he wasn’t able to find a regular spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s lineup.
“The situation is not what I wanted,” Wijnaldum said back in October last year.
“I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit and also did very well. This is something different and that takes getting used to.
“I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.
“That’s football and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.”
Following a difficult debut season at PSG, Wijnaldum is now set to join the likes of Dybala and Nemanja Matic, who have joined Jose Mourinho’s side in their busy summer transfer window.
