PSG return to action tonight hoping third time is the charm in search of a first win in Ligue 1 this season at home to Metz.

Paris Saint-Germain play host to Metz tonight at the Parc des Princes on the back of their worst start to a Ligue 1 campaign since 1984/85, having lost both their opening fixtures. It’s left them in a tricky spot and in desperate need of three points.

Their opponents Metz have their experienced their own share of problems, though. They’ve yet to collect even a point after suffering back-to-back losses, like PSG, and must now defy the odds to pull off another upset in the French capital.

The question is do Vincent Hognon’s men have what it takes? It’s a tall order for any team, but PSG’s loss of stars like Neymar could leave a window of opportunity in their wake.

PSG Form & Stats

Last Sunday’s Le Classique definitely lived up to its reputation as a hot-headed affair as five players got sent off in the dying stages, with three of them from PSG in Leandro Paredes, Layvin Kurzawa, and last but not least Neymar.

All three men are now suspended after the club’s catastrophic 1-0 defeat to rivals Marseille at home. Therefore, Thomas Tuchel must find a way to pull the squad out of their slump at such a big moment. The potential absences of Kylian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi won’t help matters with PSG coach admitting on Tuesday the lack of forward options has hurt them.

The pressure of ensuring the Parisians come out strong against Metz will likely rest of Angel Di Maria’s shoulders. The 32-year-old recovered from COVID-19 to start in the defeat to Marseille and will hope to open his account tonight.

Defeat, on the other hand, will condemn PSG to their worst-ever start in a Ligue 1 campaign.

Key Team Stats

  • Won last eight league games against Metz and scored 27 times to average 3.4 goals-per-game.
  • Haven’t lost to Metz since March 1996 (P13 W10 D3).
  • Kept 8 clean sheets in last 10 home games against Metz in all competitions.
  • Not lost three games in a row since January to February 2010.

Metz Form & Stats

The visitors head to the Parc des Princes with their own set of problems, having lost their opening two matches of the new Ligue 1 season to Lille and AS Monaco.

It’s certainly not been any easy start by means for Metz, and they’re not expected to walk away with anything significant tonight either. A home clash against fellow strugglers Reims this Sunday, however, could be a turning point in their campaign.

So at the very least Hognon’s side should feel confident of opening their account soon whether it’s tonight or over the weekend.

Key Team Stats

  • Lost four of their last seven Ligue 1 games (W2 D1 L4).
  • Have scored under 2.5 goals in 11 of their last 13 away league games.
