The Parisians have sold Ander Herrera on a permanent deal.

Athletic Bilbao have triggered their buy option to sign Paris Saint-Germain loanee Ander Herrera.

Herrera joined Bilbao on a loan deal in August, hoping to get more playing time at the La Liga side. The 33-year-old has featured for Bilbao 11 times so far this season, gradually finding his place in the Basque side’s squad.

Herrera broke into Europe’s top-level football when he joined Bilbao back in 2011. After spending three years at the club, he joined Manchester United, where he played for five years.

The experienced midfielder’s new contract at Bilbao runs until the end of the 2023-24 season. Both the Spanish side and PSG confirmed the news on their official Twitter accounts on Wednesday.

At PSG, Herrera never became a regular starter, but he made 95 appearances during his three-season spell at Parc des Princes. The Spaniard won two Ligue 1 titles and two Coupe de France trophies.

Herrera’s departure from the Ligue 1 champions allowed PSG to loan Keylor Navas to Nottingham Forest. According to FIFA rules, a club cannot loan out more than eight over 21 players unless they recall or sell one of them.

Bilbao have slipped to ninth place in La Liga after a run of five winless games. Herrera and co will take on Cadiz in their next league match on Friday
