A player known for wearing his heart on his sleeve has hit out at the formation of the controversial breakaway Super League.
Ander Herrera has condemned the founders of the European Super League saying they are “stealing” football from the fans.
The announcement of the European Super League on Sunday night gave rise to a storm of controversy, with fans and media alike expressing disappointment at the new-formed competition.
The denouncers are of the view that the league is just a way for big clubs to make more money and that it would make other esteemed footballing competitions redundant, essentially hindering the natural progression of smaller clubs.
Herrera said via a Twitter post: “I fell in love with popular football, with the football of the fans, with the dream of seeing the team of my heart compete against the greatest.
“If this European super league advances, those dreams are over, the illusions of the fans of the teams that are not giants of being able to win on the field competing in the best competitions will end.
“I love football and I cannot remain silent about this, I believe in an improved Champions League but not in the rich stealing what the people created, which is nothing other than the most beautiful sport on the planet.”
UEFA and FIFA both expressed disapproval of the Super League, with the former even stating that it could ban players and clubs from participating in its competitions.
