The record seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s current deal at PSG will expire at the end of this month.
Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier has announced Lionel Messi will depart the club at the end of his two-year contract this summer.
The 35-year-old forward is set to play his final PSG game on Saturday at home to Clermont Foot in Ligue 1.
“I [have] had the privilege of managing the best player in the history of football,” Galtier said in a pre-match press conference on Thursday.
“This will be his last match at the Parc des Princes. I dare to hope that he will be welcomed in the best possible way.”
What will Messi do now?
In 2021, Messi made a bold move to join PSG after spending 21 years in Barcelona. He joined the Parisian club for free and has since enjoyed a productive spell in France.
In 74 games across all competitions, the Argentina captain has put away 32 goals and dished out 35 assists. He formed a deadly front three alongside Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, helping PSG win consecutive Ligue 1 championship titles. However, even with the mighty trio in the same team, it wasn’t enough for the club to end its quest for a maiden Champions League title after back-to-back exits in the last-16.
Various reports have linked Messi with a lucrative move to Al Hilal. The Saudi Arabian club has reportedly tabled a world-record €400 million per season offer to his representatives.
His old team, FC Barcelona, is also open to re-signing him. President Joan Laporta and manager Xavi Hernandez have both publicly expressed a desire to reunite in Catalonia. The David Beckham-owned MLS side Inter Miami is another option.
