The contract standoff saga between PSG and Kylian Mbappe has taken a new twist, with the Parisian club accepting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.
After missing out on Lionel Messi, Saudi team Al Hilal made a record €300 million ($332m) bid for Kylian Mbappe on Monday, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The offer eclipses the world-record €222 million Paris Saint-Germain paid to sign Neymar Jr. from FC Barcelona in August 2017.
PSG have reportedly accepted the bid, leaving Al Hilal free to approach Mbappe. The Saudi team is willing to offer the striker a world-record salary. It would surpass the €200 million per season deal Cristiano Ronaldo currently enjoys at the Riyadh-based club Al Nassr.
There are also reports circulating that Al Hilal would be prepared to offer Mbappe just a one-year deal. This way, after a season of Saudi Arabian football, he would be free to join Spanish side Real Madrid.
At the time of writing, talks have not taken place between Mbappe and Al Hilal.
The 2018 World Cup winner is in the middle of a contract standoff with PSG. His decision to not extend his deal has left the French club’s chiefs fuming. They suspect he has already agreed to join Real Madrid in 2024.
By then, Mbappe’s contract would’ve expired, meaning he would leave PSG on a free transfer – an outcome the Parisians are desperate to avoid.
On Saturday, they even cut Mbappe from their pre-season tour of Japan.
