Paris Saint-Germain defeated Marseille 2-1 in their Ligue 1 game on Monday. The Parisians bagged a crucial Le Classique victory after a great performance in the first half.

PSG march toward Ligue 1 title 🏆

PSG pushed for an early breakthrough at Parc des Princes and managed to get what they were looking for only 12 minutes into the game.

A sublime cross from Marco Veratti found Neymar, who chipped the ball over Marseille’s keeper as soon as his flying leg hit it. Mauricio Pochettino’s side then tried to slow the game down by keeping the ball in midfield.

However, the hosts couldn’t stop Marseille from scoring the equalizer just after the half-hour mark. A missed punch by Gianluigi Donnarumma saw Duje Caleta-Car receiving Marseille’s corner just behind PSG’s goal-line. The Croatian centre-back then nodded the ball to make it 1-1 for the guests.

PSG immediately started their efforts to restore their leads, with Lionel Messi scoring two disallowed goals in the span of only ten minutes.

However, PSG still managed to make it 2-1 before half-time. Following a handball in Marseille’s box, the referee awarded the hosts a penalty. Kylian Mbappe stepped to convert the spot-kick, scoring his 21st goal of the season.

The second half saw Marseille doing their best to get back into the game while PSG tried to hurt them with their quick transitional play.

The Olympians thought they had scored their second goal of the night in the 85th minute. However, the referee disallowed their goal after a lengthy VAR check. Another five minutes passed and PSG had another three points in the pocket at Parc des Princes.

What’s next for PSG?

The victory increases PSG’s lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table to 15 points. The Parisians will now prepare to meet Angers in their next league game on Wednesday.
