Police arrested a player from the English top-flight in his late 20s and have kept him in custody.

The Metropolitan Police has arrested an unnamed 29-year-old Premier League footballer on suspicion of rape.

The arrest took place in north London on Monday morning. For legal reasons, the player in question cannot be named. He remains in custody, where the police continue to question him over the alleged attack which took place last month.

“On July 4, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” read a statement from Scotland Yard.

“It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.”

The statement added: “On 4 July a 29-year-old man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody where he remains. Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

The player’s club is aware of the situation

According to The Telegraph, the player’s club is aware of the arrest but has declined to comment. He is an international footballer and ‘internationally renowned’.

It is unclear whether this player will be able to take part in his club’s pre-season fixtures or be available for the start of the new Premier League season, which starts on August 5.

His participation in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is also in doubt, with the tournament beginning in November.
