Premier League clubs have decided against the use of five-substitutes for the upcoming 2020/21 season.

Premier League sides would no longer be afforded the luxury of five substitutes when the new season returns in nine days from now.

The global pandemic that saw football come to a standstill last season brought about some changes to the game.

Post lock-down, all games in the Premier League took place behind closed doors.

There were some changes on the pitch as well. A hectic schedule was in line for players and some strategies were put in place to help cope with that. Drink breaks at certain intervals became commonplace as well as an increase in the number of substitutes.

As against the usual number of three, Premier League sides were allowed to make five substitutes. The number of players for a matchday squad was also increased from 18 to 20.

The latest report hints that things could be going back to normal gradually.

As per Skysports, representatives of Premier League sides met in a stakeholders meeting earlier today and decided against it.

A proposal was put forward to again increase the number of substitutions to five and nine players allowed on the bench. The notion failed to get up to the required 14 votes and hence it has been rejected.

It means the usual three substitutes will come back in play with a maximum of seven players allowed on the bench.

Many have claimed the five-sub rule favored the big sides who had lots of quality to pick from. But in truth, it could come as a disadvantage for Premier League sides that have European commitments.

Next in line will be the potential plan for fans to be allowed in stadiums soon enough. A test event has already taken place successfully and a potential target date of October has been lined up for fans to return.

Gradually, things could be getting back to normal in the Premier League and all over Europe.
