The Premier League accepted Newcastle United’s request to postpone the match due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

The Magpies have officially requested their match against Aston Villa to be postponed. The Premier League Board has confirmed that the game will not take place on Friday.

Newcastle United – Aston Villa has become the first Premier League match to be postponed this season. There were worries that the number of infected players would increase with a trip to Birmingham.

Steve Bruce believes the outbreak is most likely to be related to the recent break where several players traveled abroad.

The English manager had spoken about health concerns after the club’s 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace last Friday:

“Of course my concern is not just the welfare of the players, which is vitally important, but my members of staff too. We will do our best but it is difficult at the moment.”

Several Premier League clubs have been affected by Covid-19. However, the situation in the Toon Army is more alarming. The training grounds have been closed until further notice.

The first-team squad is isolating at their respective homes. A second round of tests is to be performed this week.

“All players and training ground staff will be re-tested this week and another meeting between the club, PHE, and the Premier League will take place to assess the test results,” said the Premier League statement.
