The Blues crashed out of the EFL Cup after a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Graham Potter believes Chelsea have shown impressive progress despite their EFL Cup elimination in midweek.

Manchester City cruised past Chelsea with a relatively easy win at Etihad. However, the Blues managed to force City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega into making a number of brilliant saves.

“Obviously, we are disappointed with the result but in terms of how we played, we created some good chances and there was a better structure and a better performance level,” Potter said.

“The team looked closer to what we want it to look like. The boys had great courage and they tried against a top team.

“Their keeper got the man of the match I think, which tells a bit of the story. But overall I think it was a step forward for us.”

Chelsea have shown clear signs of improvement since appointing Potter as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement in early September.

However, a run of four winless games has seen Potter’s men slip to the seventh spot on the Premier League table.

Chelsea will play their last pre-World Cup game against Newcastle on Saturday. The Blues will then stay out of action until their match against Bournemouth on December 27.
