The Portugal captain remains confident he and his teammates will make it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo is confident Portugal will qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

A shock 2-1 home defeat to Serbia cost Fernando Santos’ side top spot in Group A on Sunday. Had they won or held their opponents to a draw, they would’ve automatically qualified for the World Cup. Instead, Portugal’s fate rests on the upcoming playoffs in March.

Making things even trickier for the 2016 European champions is the fact only three teams can qualify for the World Cup through the play-offs.

CR7’s message in full

On Monday morning, Ronaldo took to Instagram to assure fans he remains confident he and the team will make it to Qatar.

“Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it’s the winning road that leads us to the most desired wrecks,” he posted.

“Yesterday’s result was tough, but not enough to bring us down. The goal of attending the World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there.

“No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar.”

The World Cup play-offs will be staged between March 24 and 29.
