‘Poor Flick!’ – Mourinho insists Klopp shouldn’t have won Best Coach award

The Bayern Munich boss led his squad to five titles in 2020 but lost out on FIFA’s Best Coach award to Klopp.

Jose Mourinho sympathized with Hansi Flick’s near-miss after his Bayern Munich counterpart lost out to Jurgen Klopp in FIFA’s Best Coach award.

Flick, who replaced Niko Kovac as Bayern manager in November 2019, led the Bavarians to a treble last season in Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League glory. They also won the UEFA Super Cup and DFL Super Cup in 2020.

FIFA naturally named him as part of a three-man shortlist for the Best Coach of the Year award alongside Leeds United’s Marcelo Bielsa and Liverpool’s Klopp.

But while many expected Flick to claim the prize, it was Klopp who instead took home the big prize in Thursday’s awards ceremony.

“I think the only chance for Flick to win is that Bayern find two or three more new competitions to win it,” Mourinho as quoted on Goal.

“So maybe if he wins seven titles in one season maybe he wins the award, because I believe he only won the Champions League, Bundesliga, Pokal, European Super Cup, German Super Cup – he only won five and the biggest one of all.

“So I think poor Flick the only chance is for Bayern to try and find two or three more trophies to see if he can win it.”

Despite ending Liverpool’s three-decade long wait for league glory last season, Klopp was surprised to beat Flick himself to the award,

“I’m grateful for it, obviously,” said the Reds boss.

“From the first moment, like everybody else, I was looking at it a bit wide-eyed, like, how did that happen?”
