According to reports, Andrea Pirlo is considering switching back to a three-man defence for Juventus next season.

New Juve boss Andrea Pirlo is already thinking of a tactical change for Juventus next season.

Last term, the Bianconeri were poor at the back and the recently appointed manager is looking to sort out that department.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pirlo is open to switching back to the system that had proved so successful under Antonio Conte and at times also Max Allegri.

Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 system didn’t work as well as it could’ve done, especially at the back, where the Bianconeri conceded a massive 43 Serie A goals.

Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are old hands at a three-man defence, but there are some intriguing alternatives for Pirlo to work with.

Matthijs de Ligt is out until November following a shoulder surgery, while Merih Demiral and Cristian Romero have some experience of working in a three.

Daniele Rugani is increasingly likely to be sold this summer, in part due to his strength in a 4-3-3 formation.

Rather, the report suggests Alex Sandro and even Danilo could be used by Pirlo in centre-back roles. However, they will be given more freedom to push forward and start moves from the back.
