A third generation of the talented Maldini family scored in the Rossoneri shirt, helping them seal a slender win.

Stefano Pioli expresses his delight after AC Milan “suffer and take home the win” in the Serie A meeting with Spezia on Saturday.

The audience at Stadio Alberto Picco had to wait until the second period to see the first goal of the game but to the disappointment of the majority of them, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.

Daniel Maldini, the son of Paolo Maldini and grandson of Cesare Maldini, headed home at minute 48 to mark his full league debut with a goal and to put Milan ahead. Late in the game, Daniele Verde leveled matters for Spezia but Brahim Diaz notched the match-winner six minutes later.

The 2-1 result saw the Rossoneri maintain their unbeaten run in the Serie A campaign and rise to the top of the table.

“It’s a great victory, because we played well, but not very well, and getting the result anyway shows mental strength,” Pioli told DAZN post-match.

“This is a young squad, but they believe in themselves, in the team, and in our approach to football. We mustn’t lose our humility, but it’s only right they feel able to handle certain pressure and win any game.

“The pressure and expectations have increased around us this season, but we are showing that we can handle that.

“Once again, we were able to suffer and take home the win, which is a sign of real mental strength, because you need to have that in your locker and cannot always dominate the opponent. That means we are really maturing now.”
