Arsenal are tracking the development of Dayot Upamecano and Per Mertesacker has been besmirched by the defender’s talents.
Dayot Upamecano is loving his association with the Red Bull group. The young French defender was on the books of RB Salzburg. His impressive displays earned him the step up to RB Leipzig.
His development has not stalled at the Red Bull Arena, making 83 first-team appearances. European big wigs have been impressed by his performances, with Arsenal keeping a close eye.
Leipzig have moved swiftly to give him an improved contract. He has been bound to the club until 2023 with a €50 million release clause.
Mertesacker hailed how the Evreux native continues to improve and gives consistent displays for Die Roten Bullen. He likened Upamecano to a young Lucio and believes the contract extension will calm his nerves.
Upamecano was influential in RB Leipzig’s win over Atletico Madrid. Mertesacker saw the fixture and cannot stop raving about his talents.
“I was very excited about the Atletico game,” Mertesacker told Goal. “He showed so much and did it right: the courage of a Lucio who just goes forward, but also my solid game of simply finding the right man or withdrawing.”
